It may be difficult to enjoy your morning single source or single estate cup of coffee when you are besieged with so many silly myths about coffee. There are a number of tall tales about coffee that can affect how you enjoy your single estate sourced coffee. Here they are.

#1 Drinking Coffee in the Afternoon Will Cause Insomnia

It is true that caffeine is a stimulant, but the caffeine you have after lunch is processed through your liver quickly. After four to seven hours, most of the caffeine is long gone from your body. So, if you drink a cup of great coffee at 3 PM, you will be fine at bedtime.

#2 Use Boiling Water On the Fresh Coffee Grounds

If the water temperature is more than 200 degrees F, the water will pull some of the bitter oils from the grounds and can scorch them. Why spend money on great single estate coffee if you burn the coffee with boiling water? Crazy!

#3 Coffee Will Sober You Up

Caffeine can make a drunk person more alert but it will not make you sober. Actually, it can make you MORE likely to engage in risky behavior when drunk because you are more alert.

#4 Drinking Coffee Helps Weight Loss

Caffeine is a stimulant and this can slightly increase metabolism, but it won’t be enough to help with a diet. Good coffee may help to reduce your desire to eat briefly, but there is no evidence that drinking coffee helps with weight loss.

#5 Pregnant Women Should Not Drink Coffee

Caffeine does not harm a fetus, but it is a good idea to limit your coffee intake to about one cup per day. Caffeine can go through the placenta and get to the baby, but there is no evidence that says it is harmful. Still, better safe than sorry, so limit it to one cup or 200 mg per day.

#6 Coffee Will Stunt Growth

The idea that coffee drinking stunts growth is an old wives’ tale. It is not known how this myth began, but there is definitely no evidence that this is true.

The next time you sit down to enjoy a steaming cup of single estate, high quality coffee, be sure that you don’t fall for any of the above myths.
